Henry Mancini, with this piece, pioneered a "formula" which has been vastly imitated and used by songwriters and rock musicians ever since: lay down an unmistakable theme, stick to it throughout, and ornament it with improvisation to finish - Mancini's genius was, all that ornamentation was WRITTEN! Hence. "Peter Gunn" never varied and achieved "gold" status. Impossible to improve upon

It appears from the comments that people are just accustomed to the original version or have some form of attachment to it, so they are already biased and less receptive to anyone else singing it. I felt Michael beautifully highlighted different aspects of its composition while showing respect to Mancini. It didn't deviate too much from the original. Michael's voice suits it and probably why he was chosen to sing it. People should recognise this intent and perhaps shift the perspective from criticism to appreciation. Music is highly subjective, and what resonates with one person might not with another. I would like to hear the critics' versions. 😁

Buble used to be cool , but I’ve come to the conclusion he’s a very good karaoke singer and that’s about it . He’s no got what Sinatra had . The phrasing , the resonance is not as rich , the tone.
